Toyota Recalls Fuel Cell Mirai Cars (GM, F) quoting : "Investopedia"

Toyota is recalling all 2,840 Mirai fuel cell cars due to problems that could cause the hydrogen-powered cars to stop moving. Although all-electric and hybrid cars are growing in popularity, Toyota markets fuel cell cars as the real cars of the future. Toyota says the car could quit because the voltage from the fuel cell boost converter can go beyond its limits and stop the fuel cell system. As electric cars need charging stations across the country, fuel cell cars require hydrogen fueling stations, something that has made the cars last on the popularity list. Toyota recalls its hydrogen-powered Mirai to update the software for the fuel cell system.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Technology Comes Under FireWhile the glitch reportedly has yet to cause any accidents, it still represents a massive blow to Toyota and the rest of the automotive industry's bid to popularize hydrogen-powered cars. The likes of FuelCell Energy (FCEL) and Plug Power (PLUG) will be most affected by Toyota's misfortunes, because both are directly invested in the fuel cell technology that powers the Mirai. For example, General Motors (GM), which so far has reportedly achieved over three million miles of hydrogen fuel cell testing, recently agreed to invest $85 million with Honda to continue producing the technology at its factory in Michigan. Issues of the fuel cell boost converter exceeding its maximum voltage and then shutting down forced the company to recall 2,800 vehicles across its native Japan, the U.S., Europe and the United Arab of Emirates. Meanwhile, Ford (F) has made no secret of its desire to launch the first affordable hydrogen-powered vehicle.
