ToyotaAnd we also previously saw Ford's 2015 commercial truck Tonka concept F-750. ToyotaThe Tonka theme has enduring appeal, as Toyota's American team produced a 580-horsepower supercharged V8 Tundra Tonka concept for the 2014 Specialty Equipment Market Association show and a Tonka 4Runner for the 2015 edition. The HiLux Tonka Concept isn't above dressing up a bit, with a carbon fiber-skinned hood and tailgate, plus a rear spoiler to provide even more aggressive style than the yellow paint and black lettering already give it. We liked driving the Tacoma in snow, but this sand-ready Tonka HiLux looks like even more fun, thanks to upgrades like a 6-inch suspension lift and massive 35-inch off-road tires. ToyotaA key difference between U.S.-market and foreign-market Toyota pickups is the drivetrain, and the HiLux is powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine that enthusiasts would desperately love to get in the American Tacoma.

Toyota turned a HiLux pickup into a real-life Tonka Truck
Toyota turned a HiLux pickup into a real-life Tonka TruckAt some point growing up, most kids spent some time playing in sand or dirt with big yellow toy trucks — more thank likely those from Hasbro's Tonka Trucks line. Those with fond memories of those times are just who Toyota is looking to appeal to with its latest concept: a 2016 HiLux pickup designed to resemble a life-sized Tonka Truck. Outfitted with plenty of off-road gear, it looks just as if a kid's toy was brought to life. Pairing that with a snorkel system means the HiLux Tonka can wade into some deep waters, while a heavy-duty suspension and huge 35-inch tires mean it can go off-road just about anywhere. This one-off concept was put together by designers at Toyota Australia, and is in part to celebrate 2017 being the 80th anniversary for Toyota and the 70th anniversary for Tonka.

Toyota made our childhood dreams come true with a life-sized Tonka Truck
Designers at Toyota Australia have built a concept HiLux pickup styled after the classic Tonka trucks. If you're lucky enough to live in Australia, you have a chance to check the concept truck out in the coming months: Toyota is touring it around the country, with stops planned through June. The design team made some modifications off a 2016 SR5 double cab HiLux truck: they outfitted the concept vehicle with a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, and it's been raised up additional six inches. Toyota describes the HiLux concept vehicle as a "full-size dream toy for adults," one that commemorates the truck becoming the best-selling vehicle in 2016, as well as a pair of global anniversaries for both Toyota and Tonka (80th and 70th, respectively). It's the truck you dreamed of owning while you were playing in the sandbox as a kid.
