New Toyota FT-4X debuts in New York

The Toyota FT-4X concept has been showcased at the New York Auto Show and the new four-wheel drive compact SUV concept looks urbane. Toyota FT 4X ConceptThe FT-4X has continued the FJ-40s legacy with the short chassis and minimal overhangs, both fore and aft. The FT-4X takes its design inspiration from the yesteryear Toyota FJ 40, the Japanese challenger to the Jeeps and the Land Rovers. As for the styling, the FT looks like a millennial take on the FJ styling with the sunglass-like white grille in the front. Like we said in our previous story when Toyota had teased the FT-4X for the first time, the FT-4X is actually the soft-roader version of the FJ Cruiser, one of Toyota's bestselling SUVs.

The FT-4X Concept is designed to meet the imagined needs of city-bound millennials with a sense of spontaneous weekend adventure. The four-wheel drive system is mechanical, there is no infotainment or touch screen system, just a cradle for drivers to mount their smartphone and use apps. "You can really tell that we had a blast designing the FT-4X because it looks fun to use and fun to drive," said Calty Studio Chief Designer Ian Cartabiano. There are open and closed storage spaces throughout the cabin, some of which are waterproof, some chilled, and some heated. Toyota's New York Auto Show car is a crossover for those who prefer to scroll rather than take a stroll in the great outdoors.
