Over the next four years, Toyota will invest $35 million into AI research related to materials science. Toyota is one of the main proponents of hydrogen fuel cell cars, and until recently, criticized battery-electric cars as impractical. Now, Toyota hopes to use AI to find new materials faster. The work will be conducted through the automaker's Toyota Research Institute, an R&D group started in 2015 that previously focused on AI development for autonomous cars. The carmaker is specifically interested in materials that can improve the performance of batteries and fuel cells.

Toyota preps FT-4X off-road concept for New York

Toyota said Wednesday morning it will bring something called the FT-4X concept to the show, dropping a two-sentence statement titled "Four Wheeling. An FJ40 off-road-themed successor makes the most sense, though Toyota didn't specify what kind of vehicle the FT-4X concept is. Fans of the legendary Toyota FJ40 will be getting a look at its potential successor next month at the New York Auto Show . Toyota built the retro FJ Cruiser – a successor to the FJ40 – from 2006-2016, with US sales ending in 2014 . The company recently has been using off-road vehicles to burnish its reputation as a rough-and-tough truck and SUV maker.
