Imagining a Toyota Century family (that will probably never exist)

Share PinterestEmailJust about every major automaker has had a large sedan that's resisted change through the years. The second one is the Toyota Century, which just received its first major redesign since 1997 ... not to imply that the 1997 version was particularly modern. So what would a full Toyota Century lineup look like, if the base 2018 were expanded into a full range of passenger cars today, starting from scratch? Photo by AutoweekA full Toyota Century lineup would not be complete without a station wagon, a segment that remains a little more alive in Japan than it does here. Finally, a three-row Century limousine with seating for six is something that could easily be offered by the automaker even today.

After about 21 years, Toyota is finally replacing the Century with a third-generation model keeping the classic and classy look while bringing the underpinnings up to date. There are glossy wood accents here and there, along with some rather interesting door handles and a 20-speaker sound system. But all of these come at a price, with Toyota asking the equivalent of almost $180,000 for its crown jewel of the JDM range. As a final note, the Century is not the only luxed-up sedan Toyota is selling exclusive in the Land of the Rising Sun as the fancy Crown is also a JDM affair.

2018 Toyota Century is a $180,000 Japanese Rolls-Royce

As it stated in Toyota announced this week that the 2018 Century will set buyers back a cool ¥19.6 million, or about $180,000 at today's exchange rate. ToyotaYou won't see any Toyota badges on the Century, though -- the phoenix that adorns its front grille is hand-engraved over a period of six weeks. Even the rear is devoid of the Toyota name, displaying only "Century" in big letters across the trunk. While the last century used a big ol' V12 for motive force, the new Century relies on something a bit less thirsty. The order books are now open for the new Century, and Toyota hopes to sell about 50 a month.
